The 'Interdisciplinary Strategic Partnership Tokyo – Zurich Symposium 2023' was held in Zurich on the 15th and 17th of October 2023. This symposium was organized to promote collaboration between the University of Tokyo, the University of Zurich, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. We, KEPLR, co-hosted the 'Workshop on Plant Biology'.

キックオフミーティングを終えて 京都大学 農学研究科 ポスドク 山森晃一

筆者はポスドク二年目でありながら、海外渡航経験がほとんどない。学生時代に海外の大学の研究室との交流や、国際学会への参加などのチャンスはあったものの、様々な理由で実現しなかった。かといって、海外に出ていくモチベーションがないわけではなく、むしろポスドク期間中に短期でも留学をしたいと考えている。今回のキックオフミーティングは計画している海外留学に向けて、コネクションづくりや自信をつけられるようなきっかけになればと思い参加した。

キックオフミーティングの午前中の口頭発表を聞きながら、筆者はかなり不安と焦りを覚えていた。というのも筆者は英語に自信がなかった。世界で認められるハイレベルな研究発表を前にし、自身の研究の面白さを十分に伝えられるだろうか、相手の質問を理解して的確な議論ができるだろうか、と不安だった。しかし、ポスター発表の内容を紹介するフラッシュトークの時間になり、自身の研究の話を始めると、参加者の方々がうなずいて聞いてくれているのが分かった。話しながら、自分の英語が通じている、自分の考えが伝わっているという確信が得られ、自信がついた。続くポスター発表でも、堂々と研究内容を伝えられ、いくらか新しいフィードバックを得ることができた。今後も引き続き英語力や発信力を磨き、より多くの研究者との交流できるよう努めたい。

実は筆者はKEPLRのロゴの原案を担当している。このロゴは中心の点が研究者を表しており、研究者間のネットワークを表す線が花の輪郭になるようにデザインをしたつもりである。花をモチーフにした理由は、本プロジェクトが植物の生殖にフォーカスしていることに加え、筆者のような若手が海外経験を通じて立派な研究者として ‘花開く’ という意味も込めている。筆者自身もこのキックオフミーティングミーティングをきっかけに留学し、研究者として花開くよう精進したい。
